Few things in the history of photography play a role as important as the classical nature of the black and white image. Although the advent of color introduced new possibilities and became the de facto standard, the black and white photograph retains its place as the preeminent form of fine art photography.


This is a destination workshop led by internationally published photographer and workshop leader, Joel Wolfson. Based in the cool mountains of Flagstaff, Arizona; this workshop will encompass photo shoots in the field within a diverse landscape of mountains, National Monuments, and other idyllic Northern Arizona locations. You will be led through a unique experience that emphasizes individualized instruction with a hands-on, learn-by-doing approach.


This is an intensive 4-day workshop with predawn departures for shooting locations, and all-day classroom sessions followed by sunset shoots.

Participants should be familiar with working in Lightroom and/or Photoshop, with a heavier emphasis on Photoshop.  Topaz and Nik software trial downloads will be required for the class.

Please be aware that shooting locations stated in this itinerary may change depending on weather and lighting conditions. We want to give you the best possible photo opportunities.


Day One- Thursday, August 4, 2022

  • Meet in the classroom for orientation and review of participant images
  • Presentation and discussion about thinking in monochrome
  • Break for lunch
  • The black and white process from ideas to output
  • Black and white visualization and nailing exposure with the Zone System
  • How infrared can add intrigue to your monochrome images for something different
  • Late afternoon/evening landscape and trail shoot in the San Francisco Peaks mountain range putting classroom work into action

Day Two- Friday, August 5, 2022

  • Depart hotel before sunrise for a field shoot in an ideal mountain site for black and white with opportunities for broad landscapes, details, and everything in between.
  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Classroom for editing and critique
  • Break for lunch
  • Black and White composition and visual design
  • Afternoon/evening at multiple locations to shoot everything from antique farm equipment to people and architecture

Day Three- Saturday, August 6, 2022

  • Depart before sunrise to Wupatki National Monument
  • Field shoot of well intact ancient ruins practicing accurate exposure and placing zones
  • Breakfast
  • Classroom for editing and critique
  • Walkthrough/practice of best techniques for black and white conversion and processing.
  • Options for presentation and display of black and white
  •  Free time or open lab for culling and editing with the instructor available
  • Farewell dinner at a local restaurant

Day Four- Sunday, August 7, 2022

  • Depart before sunrise for Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
  • Field shoot with a challenging range of tones in volcanic fields implementing placing zones and other techniques
  • Classroom and post-capture production techniques
  • Check out and lunch
  • Black & White production techniques with Lightroom and specialized/alternative software
  • Prep favorite images for a final print to be made by a professional lab and shipped to participants.
  • Wrap-up and departure


Physical Rating: Moderate

Based in Flagstaff, Arizona, the elevation is approximately 7,000′.  Participants who are not accustomed to higher elevations should remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.  It also helps to arrive a day ahead of time to get acclimated.  Hiking will be minimal, however, participants are responsible for carrying their own gear on photo shoots.  Walking sticks are helpful for navigating hikes in the dark.

Should you find it necessary to cancel your workshop, the following cancellation policy applies – NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • 91 days or more prior to the start of the workshop your deposit will be refunded less $100
  • 90 days full payment is due
  • 61-90 days your workshop fees will be refunded in the form of an AHPS Store Credit Voucher less $100 administrative fee.  The voucher is good for 18 months.
  • * 60 days or less until departure – No refund.

* If we are able to fill your seat and the workshop runs at full enrollment we will refund your workshop fees less the $100 administrative fee.

NOTE:  Workshop bookings including, but not limited to, outfitters, permit agencies, lodging and more are requiring firm financial commitments at 90 days.  Therefore, in order to continue to bring you to great destinations, we must strictly adhere to our cancellation policy as outlined above. We recognize cancellations can sometimes be unavoidable which is why securing a Travel Protection Plan is highly encouraged.


Arizona Highways PhotoScapes reserves the right to cancel or change any workshop if our minimum enrollment is not met or if situations beyond our control arise that may create unsafe or undesirable travel conditions.  Any cancelation or postponement as a result of situations beyond our control, AHPS does not promise any refunds or credits.  If and when feasible, we will attempt to reschedule the workshop at a later date.  Alternatively, we may decide to issue you credit for a future workshop, or issue a refund, less any non-refundable deposits we have paid to workshop providers on your behalf.


Please note that AHPS is not liable for any additional participant expenses incurred such as airfare, hotel accommodations, or any other components booked outside of the workshop.

PAYMENT TERMS:  A minimum deposit is due at registration to reserve your space.  Please refer to the specific workshop for the required deposit.  Final payments are due 90 days prior to departure.  Approximately 15 days prior to the due date you will receive a reminder email that your balance is coming due.
