Gavin’s knowledge of the areas wildlife both behaviorally and anecdotally as well as his expertise in the history and culture of South Africa will enrich your experience beyond compare.

The first five days of the workshop will be spent in the world-renowned Sabi Sand Private game reserve which is in the heart of South Africa’s big cat country. Here, you will have the opportunity to photograph and experience lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, hippo, cheetah, hyenas, wild dogs and other species of wildlife. Throughout each day Gavin will provide his photographic insight on capturing dramatic scenes as they unfold.

Riding in open-top game vehicles driven by private guides, you will have unobstructed views for capturing amazing moments of these predators engaged in territorial battle, feeding frenzies, nuturing their young or simply basking amongst the African bush. Our safari guides and trackers will get you safely and quickly to the action for setting up great image captures.

And while your days will be filled with excitement and beauty, our all-inclusive, deluxe accommodations at the Nkorho Bush Lodge will simply exceed your expectations. You can relax and unwind in the roomy, well-appointed challets, enjoy a spa treatment or take a dip in the pool, all the while feasting on exquisite ethnic cuisine.  Here’s just a sample of what you will see while staying at the Nkorho Bush Lodge.

Our Sabi Sands Safari is not the only captivating photographic opportunities in South Africa. The second half of our excursion will take place in and around the coastal capital of Cape Town. Here, the city’s vibrant culture and history combined with the coastal scenery will be the backdrop for our next five days.

From the Table Mountain National Park to the Cape of Good Hope our days will be filled with color, contrast, wildlife, history and culture. During the week we will make our way to photograph the colorful beach huts on St. James beach and enjoy the scurrying penguins at Boulder’s Beach. We will visit prominent harbors along the coastline and take in the historic 16th century colonial structures in the Eastern Cape Province.

Our travels will take us to one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, where you can capture a kaledeiscope of indigenous flora. Mornings and evenings we will focus on beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the sweeping views of Table Mountain to the rugged coastline. Of course the true essence of Cape Town will be uncovered as we tour the local townships and visit with the South African people in their local community.

Our guided walking tour in the photogenic Bo-Kaap, allows you to photograph the vibrant and colorful houses, and then onto street and building photographs in Cape Town city center, including the flower sellers in Adderley street, Green Market square, and the Company Gardens with its friendly squirrels that will pose for photographs in return for payment in peanuts.

Day 9 – Monday, April 15 Township Tour & Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

This must be the ultimate photographic experience! Unlike other township tours, that simply drives around showing you what a township looks like, our People and Portrait Township Tours is about the people that live in the township and how to take amazing portraits with your camera, regardless of what camera you use or your photographic skills.  We walk around; we meet the people in their homes, while learning about our diverse cultures and photography. Get away from the tourist traps, the fancy hotels and experience the real South Africa with real South Africans.

Get fantastic photographs in the informal settlement of the township Langa, the oldest township in Cape Town. Photograph the colorful shacks, visit the old original hostels build in the apartheid years for migrant workers, the children playing in the dusty streets and drink home brew Unqumbothi beer at a local shebeen.  Meet locals as they go about their daily activities, and visit a Sangoma (traditional healer) who will happily pose for you while you adjust your ISO to take photographs of him in his dark and mysterious consulting room.

To add to your township experience we have a lunch stop at the famous Mzoli’s, a local eatery in Gugulethu (Lunch Included).  After our township experience, we visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, dubbed as the most beautiful botanical garden in South Africa, and end the day with sunset photographs of Table Mountain from sunset beach.

  • Visit to Langa Township, including:
  • Guga S’thebe Arts and Craft center, old hostels, shacks, shebeen and a Children’s Day Care Centre
  • Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
  • Sunset photo session of Table Mountain

Day 10 – Tuesday, April 16False Bay – Maccasar – Departure

Today is departure day, but with the flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg leaving at 2:10pm, we have a full morning for photography. Typically this morning is used for photography that has been missed due to weather reasons; as a result we will be up before Sunrise and will be on a beach for the morning sunrise photos. If the weather has cooperated and we have missed nothing then this morning will be used for a Sunrise of Table Mountain from the beach at False Bay, or we will get to photograph Maccasar which is a very photogenic old abandoned old holiday resort on the beach that is being swallowed up by the sand.

  • Sunrise of Table Mountain at False Bay or Sunrise at Maccasar
  • Checkout of Hotel
  • Transport to Cape Town Airport
  • Fly to Johannesburg (flight not included)
  • Depart for the USA

Strenuous Rating: Moderate.

The first portion of our excursion will entail riding in open Game Vehicles so participants should be prepared for weather concerns (sunscreen, hat, etc) and dust.
