If you ever thought about the process of becoming a professional outdoor photographer or getting paid to have your outdoor images published, then this workshop is for you. Learn to shoot salable outdoor images of landscapes, animals, wildlife and even travel and adventure genres and get published in magazines, calendars, cards and other editorial markets.

 

Discover how to connect with photo editors and photo buyers in local, regional and national markets. Understand the value of your work, proper business acumen and how to find the right clients. This workshop is a balanced mix of classroom presentations and discussions on file management, best business practices, marketing and promotion along with field shoots designed to help you develop a commercial eye to increase the publishing potential of your images, and constructive critiques to help reinforce and solidify key principles for success. We will use three fantastic local locations, the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Saguaro National Park and Ironwood Forest National Monument to develop and practice new skills. You will leave this workshop with confidence and clarity as you continue toward becoming a published photographer.

Please be aware that shooting locations stated in this itinerary may change. Each day we will determine which locations are best based on light and weather conditions. We want to give you the best photo opportunities possible.

 

Day 1 –   Wednesday, March 11 :  Daily Theme:  Awareness and Self-Discovery – learning the state of the industry and an overview of what it takes to be successful.

  • Participant visual introductions and initial critique.
  • Presentations and discussions include:  Introducing and defining commercial outdoor photography.
  • The current state of the outdoor photography industry.  Who licenses outdoor imagery and how do they get it.
  • What it takes to be successful:  myth vs reality.  10-Steps to successful outdoor photography business.
  • Lunch break
  • Customizing your camera and optimizing for your shooting style and different shooting situations.
  • Explanation of participant assignments for days 4 & 5.
  • Evening/sunset location shoot at Saguaro National Park.

Day 2 –  –   Thursday, March 12 :  Daily Theme: On-Location logistics and shooting practices.  Creating Salable Imagery

  • Sunrise shoot on location:  Picacho Peak State Park.

Presentations and Discussions:

  • Gearing up for outdoor location photography and traveling.  Best practices for photographing in a variety of outdoor environments and in extreme conditions.
  • Going light and mobile.  Using assistants and lighting.
  • Trip planning:  How to maximize marketable image potential of places you plan to visit.
  • Creative Seeing and Thinking:  a more critical look at lighting, design, finding your personal style and being different.
  • How to make marketable imagery in less than ideal weather and lighting conditions and understanding what sells and what does not

Day 3 – Friday, March 13:  Daily theme: Post-production, editing, file management, and basic business writing.

  • Morning shoot:  Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum.

Presentations and Discussions:

  • Best practices for file management, keywording, image tracking and being an objective and ruthless editor.
  • Making submissions best practices.
  • Meeting industry standard quality control for published images.
  • Business writing:  proposals and query letters.
  • Group edit and critique of first 3 shoots

Day 4 – Saturday, March 14:  Daily Theme: Breaking into the business:

Presentations and Discussions:

  • Group critique of submission assignments.
  • Establishing a business presence:  websites, blog, social media, and branding.
  • Understanding the value of your images and usage rights.
  • Pricing your imagery for editorial and local markets.  Pricing programs and guidance.
  • Afternoon/sunset shoot:  Pichaco Peak State Park. (This shoot session may be canceled if running short on time to cover presentations and discussions.)

Day 5 – Sunday, March 15:  Daily Theme:  Marketing and Promotion strategies

Presentations and Discussions:

  • Best ways to market your stock.  Licensing direct and seeking agency representation.
  • Portfolios:  e-promotions, printed promotions, in-person meetings.
  • Establishing working relationships with PE and AD for local and editorial markets.
  • Entering contests and seeking directories and portals.
  • Student writing assignment critiques.
  • Roadmap to the future:  Things to focus on post-workshop to continue your path to success.

Four nights lodging is included in your workshop fee. For pre- or post-workshop lodging, please contact the hotel directly to secure those room nights. Lodging is based on double occupancy. You may opt for a single supplement at an additional fee should you wish a private room.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
Should you find it necessary to cancel your workshop, the following fee schedule applies.
  • 90 days or more prior to the start of the workshop your deposit will be refunded less $100
  • Between 89 and 61 days prior to the start of the workshop, AHPS will retain your full deposit.
  • 60 days and fewer to the start of the workshop your entire workshop fee is retained.

Arizona Highways PhotoScapes reserves the right to cancel any workshop if our minimum student enrollment is not met. In the event AHPS cancels a workshop, participants will be given the option to reschedule to a later date or receive a full refund for the workshop components booked directly with AHPS.  Please Note: we are not liable for the additional expenses incurred such as airfare, hotel accommodations or any other components booked outside of the workshop.

 

PAYMENT TERMS:  A minimum deposit is due at registration to reserve your space.  Please refer to the specific workshop for the required deposit.  Final payments are due 60 days prior to departure.  Approximately 15 days prior to the due date you will receive a reminder email that your balance is coming due.
