Central Texas Wildflower Photography Workshop

5 Days - Austin, Texas
Apr 12 - Apr 16, 2019
Activity Level

Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, white prickly poppies and more will fill your lens and memory cards  on this springtime wildflower workshop.  Join Laurence Parent on this five day photo excursion through Central Texas wildflower meadows and hill country.

Registration deadline: February 28, 2019

Great rains this past fall and winter should create a great wildflower season in Central Texas.  Photographer Laurence Parent, who resided in Central Texas for more than 30 years, knows the area well.  With dozens of Texas published books  to his name and as a regular contributor for Texas Highways, Texas Monthly, and Texas Parks & Wildlife magazines, Laurence knows the best places to find them all.

During this four night, five-day workshop we will concentrate on two central areas of the state.  One will be the area surrounding Cuero and Gonzales to the southeast of Austin known for its multi-colored variety of flowers—bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, phlox, and multiple species of yellow composites and the other will center around Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country. The most common flowers there are bluebonnets and white prickly poppies, with lesser amount of paintbrush and yellow composites.

To add a bit of variety to the workshop Laurence will guide the group for an evening at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a huge bare granite dome littered with boulders and a mid-day shoot at Palmetto State Park, a miniature swamp offering a bit of the tropics.

Don’t miss your chance to photograph blossoming fields of wildflowers and intriguing landscapes of Central Texas with one of the best.

Strenuousness:  Easy to Moderate

Some mild hiking will occur on this workshop.  The longest single hike would be climbing up the main dome at Enchanted Rock approximately a 1-mile RT hike with a 400′ elevation change.  Our visit to Palmetto State Park will involve flat, easy hiking of ½  to 1 mile.  The remainder of our shooting locations will take place along roadsides and in fields near the van.  This is generally very easy, but the ground will be uneven.

Recommended Gear:

In addition to camera gear and tripods, you will need rain gear for both person and camera, insect repellent, knee pads or other pads for wildflower close-ups, and LED headlamp.
