Seeing the world close up is quite fascinating. Things you don’t typically see with the naked eye become visible with macro photography such as intricate elements, patterns, and texture. Join Northern Arizona University photography instructor and co-author of The Art of Macro Photography book, Amy Horn for this hands-on learning environment.
During this intensive workshop, Amy will teach, demonstrate and assist participants in capturing various macro subjects such as flowers, fruit, feathers, rocks, and other interesting subjects. Amy will also instruct on how to capture water droplets with colorful backdrops. She will also discuss gear options, flash, and demonstrate how to focus-stack images in order to get subjects tack-sharp from foreground to background.
During this workshop, you will put theory into practice. You will begin to understand the use of different lenses, the need for light diffusion, and the limitations and benefits of getting close. Of course, the best part of the workshop is the beautiful images you will take home of very small things.
Workshop includes:
- Photographic instruction
- One lunch
- Discount on Helicon software purchase
- Post-workshop critique
A pre-workshop webinar will be hosted one to two weeks prior to the class. The date and time will be forthcoming. The webinar will explain what is macro, and how to focus stack images. Amy will give participants an assignment for the class of taking a single image with the closest focus point. You will need to download the trial version of Helicon Focus prior to the webinar.
Day 1 – Saturday, April 1, 2023
- The workshop will kick off with introductions and a short recap of the webinar presentation.
- Then, we will jump into two small groups that rotate through different macro stations for non-focus stacked images using flowers and liquids.
- Before lunch, Amy will demonstrate focus stacking and provide props for practice.
- During our working lunch, we will practice stacking images while Amy works individually with participants on their stacking technique.
- Immediately following lunch, we return to our stations with new macro subjects to practice the beauty of macro photography through focus stacking and single images.
